Most shop boards should run the full width of the shop front and be about 2.5 to 4 ft tall. The right letter size depends on how far away your customers need to read it.

Rule of thumb for letter height
A common sign-industry rule is about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 ft of reading distance, for comfortable reading. For quick reading from a moving vehicle, go bigger.
| Reading distance | Minimum letter height | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 25 ft | 2.5–3 in | Market lane, walking customers |
| 50 ft | 5–6 in | Main road, opposite footpath |
| 100 ft | 10–12 in | Wide road, traffic |
| 200 ft | 20–24 in | Highways, building tops |
Common shop board sizes
| Shop front | Typical board size | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Small kiosk | 6 × 2 ft | 12 sq ft |
| Standard shop | 10 × 3 ft | 30 sq ft |
| Wide showroom | 20 × 4 ft | 80 sq ft |

Frequently asked questions
Is a bigger board always better?
No. A board that fits the front neatly and has clear, large letters works better than an oversized board crowded with text.
